Keypoint's VAT implementation team

Manama, 5 November 2017

Under the leadership of Mubeen Khadir and George Campbell, Keypoint has assembled a seasoned VAT implementation team with a Big 4 background and VAT experience gained in jurisdictions including the UK, Australia, Malaysia, Pakistan and South Africa. Keypoint’s market-leading VAT team continues to expand. Currently featuring a team of 11 people, Keypoint has the largest specialist VAT implementation team on the ground in Bahrain servicing the entire GCC.

Khadir commented: “Our team includes very senior VAT implementation specialists with GCC experience, as well as relevant experience from Malaysia which recently introduced a goods and services tax (GST) – a direct equivalent of VAT. VAT represents a paradigm shift for businesses across the GCC – and the challenges are real.” Campbell added, “As one of the very few chartered tax advisors working in the GCC, I am constantly surprised at the misdirected comments – particularly from so-called VAT specialists in the UAE – that VAT is straightforward. VAT is going to affect every single company in the GCC – even smaller businesses below the annual income threshold of US$100,000. In larger businesses, it is going to affect most functions – from HR and Legal to the more obvious areas like finance, procurement and IT.”

In addition to Khadir and Campbell, senior members of Keypoint’s specialist VAT team include Shaikh Omar Hisham, Willem Bam, Chris Park, Dao Han Hung and Naveed Rashid. Hisham is an ACCA-qualified manager with seven years of VAT implementation and indirect taxation experience in Malaysia who has been working across the GCC for the last year with a particular focus on the insurance sector. Bam, a manager who recently joined Keypoint from South Africa, has over 10 years of VAT experience and is a registered master tax practitioner specialising in VAT. Park is a New Zealand-qualified lawyer with over five years of VAT experience, including VAT implementation experience in Malaysia and the GCC. Hung is a senior consultant with almost five years of VAT implementation experience in Malaysia and the GCC. Rashid is a senior consultant with indirect tax (both sales tax and VAT) experience who recently joined the firm from Pakistan.

“We are committed to developing the Bahraini nationals in our team,” added Khadir. “At the moment, we have two increasingly experienced Bahraini nationals Mansoor Al Wadaei, who has a Big 4 tax background, and Zainab Mearaj, an upcoming VAT specialist with a background in both professional services and industry. Both are playing an increasingly important role in our VAT team as we continue to grow.”

“These are exciting times for Keypoint,” commented Wajdi Al-Jallad, Keypoint’s managing director. “Over the last six months – ever since we decided to launch a tax practice – we have seen daily growth in the business. A new era is on our doorstep. While the UAE and Saudi Arabia are less than two months away from implementing VAT, Bahrain and the other GCC countries are likely to move forward in the next twelve months. We look forward to the opportunities that will bring.”
